OUGD603. Extended Practice. The Method - Research Methodology Publication. Research Topic.

having further established and developed my research methodology into something that i was happy with, that i thought would be applicable to a research topic, and that i thought was personally tailored to my design process and style, i went on to consider the Design Publication that i would produce in line with it.

DESIGN PUBLICATION – you will be required to undertake a period of focused, in-depth and sustained research into an area of graphic design appropriate to your design strategy. You should apply a range of research methods in the investigation of issues, practices, practitioners and companies relating to your own particular area of study. This should culminate in the design and production of a Case Study in the form of a book (or print based delivery), interactive DVD or web site.

i considered the above and recognised that a topic to research would need to be established in order to produce the publication. i began by reflecting on my methodology and considering how i conduct research: collecting ephemera, drawing, and experiencing. i then pondered for a while on what topics these things could be applied to and created a mind map to get my ideas down and explore them:

the green writing is my reflection on each topic. with each topic there was something putting me off. ive done a lot of typography already, i like illustration as a personal pastime and not a project, i studied language for my cop, i did a climbing brief in 2nd year, i havent practised free running in a long time, vinyl records are something very deer to me and i feel like i would spoil that by using them as a research topic, and leeds is where ive lived for 4 years and i want to find out about something i dont know much about.

this left me stumped for a while and then it hit me. I had planned to go to barcelona with my girlfriend in the last week of the easter holidays so i could base my research project on that! it was perfect because it was a city in a country that i love, with a language that i speak somewhat, and a culture that is heavily creative and artistic, that boasts a number of sports, places, galleries, sights, and has a typographic consideration, and it is a city. PERFECT!

i considered how my refined methodology would work in line with this topic and it would work perfectly! everything fit.

it was then a case of agthering research using my methodology in order to inform my publoication
