i began by designing and rendering the type piece on paper in order to map out the lettering and develop the typographic content.
i measured out the space on the wayy and cut a sheet of stock to a scaled down size in order to replicate the measurements exactly. i worked out the basic wording and stylisation and then calculated and measured the x-height, kerning and leading for each word and glyph.
i then went on to measure out the grid for the actual design and began to imput the basic structure of the lettering.
i applied a ripple effect to the word illusion so that the visuals would relate to and embody the word itself.
once the pencil sketch was complete i proceeded to free hand render the outline using various weight fine liners.
from the outline i went on to develop the visual content and rendering qualities within the text.
TIME :
- i used pointillism to add depth and shape to the decorative wraps on the bottom half.
- i featured a drop 3d within the letters themselves
- i included a drop shadow along the bottom edges of each glyph
- i filled the letters with a line based pattern that ran the direction of the script
- i applied an inward facing drop shadow to the letters
- i followed the sketched ripple effect when outlining the letters
- i included a water-like black highlight to give the letters depth and word associated effect
- the lettering style i applied was aimed at mimicking strawberry laces and so appears as one continuous script
- i used pointillism to render the letters and give a more 3d, rounded appearance
- the placement of the 'Y' was kerned too far from the rest of the word (this was addressed when producing the final mural)
- the lettering style i used was simple to contrast the rest of the piece and to round off the whole design.
- i applied an inward facing block 3d to this word with a line fill following the 3d's direction
having produced the hand rendered piece i then went on to prep the wall and progress with the mural itself.
i used the projector to project the original design onto the wall to then pencil in the skeleton of the piece. unfortunately the projector would only project to a certain size and so i was forced to compromise on size. this was a minor issue however because the tpye was still big enough to be seen from the back of the classroom.
i used a variety of posca paint pens to produce the wall piece.
because there was some extra space on the sides of the mural i decided to develop a character design in line with the quote itself as an extra visual component.
i thought some sort of sandwich/pizza themed character would be appropriate to the quote and would work as a light hearted and jokey addition.
i begun by sketching a design out using biro.
the final outcome shots can be seen on a separate post.
