TEMPLE -
i began by doing some free hand pencil sketches based on some of the imagery i had seen but while trying to maintin an originality to an extent
from the original pencil designs i used tracing paper and fine liners to develop some more formalised and line based icons which would be more easily digitised if chosen
TOTEM -
i did the same for the totem concept however for totem i started by doing a component study into the different features often seen on totem poles.
having spoken to the client, and having shown them my preliminary designs for each name, they eventually decided on the name TOTEM AUDIO. from this decision i went on to produce the final icon for the night. having gained a better understanding for different feaqtures seen on totem poles, and with consideration for the fact that the icon would need to be vectorised, i produced a simpler and clearer icon within a circle constraint.
i then traced over the image with a fineliner for ease of vectorising
i then gave the image to leo for him to vectorise and produce the final logo. he worked on it to come to this final design -
while leo was developing the logo i took on the task of developing the visual side of the brand by producing a full length totem pole illustration that would be featured on promotional ephemera such as the flyers and posters.
i began by using gridded paper to create the guides for the full length illustration. i would do one side and then mirror the other side. i tried to blend each section of the totem pole into the next section and add multiple faces into what would appear to be one at first glance.
i then traced over the image with a fineliner to be able to vectorise it later.
while i was vectorising the illustration leo developed the layout and format of the facebook banner for the night. this included the consideration for colour, size, type setting and font choice. i times i shadowed him and helped decide on layout choices and formatting. i, then, took on the design and production of the flyer and poster
in terms of the illustration i began by using the live trace tool to create vectored outlines of the hand rendered illustration.
i then created an outline for the digitised illustration which would accentuate the thinner line work.
i tried adding block colour into certain features to create a separation of shape but this ended up looking too busy and didnt work as a continuous illsutration
because we decided to use a yellow to red gradient i tried applying that to the lines of the vector but because each line was a separate vector it applied the gradient to each one and so didnt look like a single gradient running threough the entire illustration and so i scrapped that idea
leo provided me with the gradient he was working on so that i could play with the vector in order for me to design the flyer. i tested the line work in black and decided this was too strong a contrast.
i tried in white and decided that this looked better however it wads too weak a contrast
so i created a block sillhouette of the illiustration and applied a fill of the same gradient but flipped
when i applied it beneath the line vector and the gradient block, which i put to a lower opacity, it created an even blend behing thew line illustration that brought the lines out from the gradient while allowing them to stay white and still be clear.
from this i went on to design the layout for the flyers that would promote the night. i used in design to develop the text and image in line with the facebook banner that leo had designed.
i developed a number of tests exploring the layout possibilities in line with leos facebook banner design
we then sent over the following designs to the client for him to see the progression we had made and for any choices he wanted to make.
at the last minute he informed us that the line up had changed and that one of the names would need to be changed so i did that. also.
we decided it was important to do a number of test prints to check the colour balance and the clarity of text and image.
the final flyer design can be found on a separate post under the same name + outcome.
POSTER -
having established the flyer design the poster design was relatively easy to produce. i included the vectorised full length totem pole illustration i had produced but the text layout was the same just larger.
when we found out about the name change i also changed that ready for print. once again the final poster can be found on the outcome post.
