OUGD603. Extended Practice. TOTEM AUDIO. Evaluation

this brief, one of the larger ones that i took on, has taught me a considerable amount and i really enjoyed completing it.

myself and leo have worked together in previous years on music event branding and promotional design and so have developed a really good cooperative working process. we have refined our skills and have been able to highlight both of our strengths to which we can then play up to. we are in tune as designers and people and so understand each others flows and progressions.

we have also worked with the same client in the past and so have developed a good designer/client relationship and are much better able to discern the clients need and wants and also to recognise where to make the choice for the client, being that the client is quite an indecisive person.

i have been able to develop both my hand rendered and digital illustration skills in line with a topic and communicative aim. i am proud of the aesthetics i have produced and feel as though they work well in line with the brief and the clients needs.

i have developed my understanding of type setting and layout for promotional ephemera and have been taught more about the transfer of design for screen to design for print, taking into account the final outcome being print based and so developing graphics that work from screen onto stock.

i have also developed my understanding of promotional design in general. being able to translate the clients communication of the nights ethos and musical values into working and successful promotional and branding graphics has definitely become a more considerable skill of mine.

i think the design outcomes improved from event to event and this shows how we were able to learn from our mistakes and develop a continuing and recognisable brand.

if doing the brief again i would have made more consideration into print and colour schemes and layout in terms of the design for the first night. i would have also made a greater effort to complete the jobs in a shorter time period. while everything was completed within an ok time period (in order for the finals to be printed and distributed around leeds) i feel as though a quicker turn around time would have given the client longer to distribute ephemera in order to promote the night better.

each night was a success and each night had a great attendance rate which proves a certain success from the designs produced. the client was happy with all the outcomes and so was i.
