OUGD603. Extended Practice. DR. ME: LECTURE & DAY BRIEF. Development

BRIEF 1:

from this we decided to relisten to the mix and write down some themes and topics we though about/could extract from the music in the form of a spider diagram:

melissa and i both thought about the overlapping sounds and were both met with images of the ocean and waves. the atmospheric music was quite relatable to the soviet transmitter and we thought that sort of imagery would work well. as we were both more comfortable with hand rendered practices, and having been inspired by DR.ME's hands on approach, we decided to work based with mechanical processes and use digital software to design the final outcome.

melissa used paints to form various patterns based on varying brush stroke direction and with an exploration of overlapping (relating to the themes we had extracted from the mix). we decided this would form the background for our vinyl sleeve design.

while she worked on this aspect, i did some visual exploration of the themes/objects i could involve in the forefront of the design. we both really liked how epic and overpowering the transmitters were and thought these would be a good object to involve. i did some sketches of different towers and their features.

having thought some more about the mix itself, and how it was split into 4 sections, i progressed the illustration to involve this theme and a range of duga-3 transmitters.

from this i went on to use illustrator to create the vector of the image and then did some experimentation into silhouettes and stencils and trying to overlay the image onto melismas background image.

from this we worked together in indesign to produce the final layout for the vinyl cover. this was relatively simple and consisted of a few spacing and alignment tests, along with the decision weather or not to include the artist/title (we chose not to). the only issue we had was the level of transparency to attribute to the illustration while maintaining clarity of image.

BRIEF 2:

we  looked at the venue (kraak gallery) and liked the idea of old venues and spaces. this prompted me to look at some photography i did of abandoned buildings which might have been useful. having looked through, we both agreed on a photo to use as a background for the poster.

having chosen an image we went into indesign to work out the text layout and ordering. i did some thumbnail sketches for potential text ordering and basic layout.

we explored the layout of text quite extensively, above a tint on top of the chosen image.
