OUGD603. Extended Practice. PTSPD Yearbook: Evaluation

this brief has definitely taught me a lot about a number of different design considerations. i have enjoyed working on this brief and feel, as a group, we have produced a decent outcome, especially in comparison to previous years yearbooks.

firstly i feel that we worked well as a group. there were the inevitable minor disagreements and tense moments but these never resulted in major arguments or fall outs and i feel as though we were all able to communicate our true opinions and feelings without fear of conflict or persecution by the rest of the group. danielle assumed the natureal role of leadership and did extremely well with it. she took on a majority of the work load and allocated jobs well also. leo took on the imfographic role which was definitely suited to him. and because jordans took on most of the visual side of the work, something which i feel as though i would have been suited to but that jordan excecuted very well, i was left to do the more menial and arduous tasks. i didnt mind so much because i felt like i wasa contributing to the group still, however, i feel as though my design skills could have been utlised better. but then i could have attempted to voice this better.

my organisation skills within this project are what improved the most. the development and sorting out of all the contents and flow of the yearbook was very confusing at times but i stuck with it and was able to produce the final contents successfully which dictated the whole yearbook actuaslly.

i had fun producing the tribal font with jordan and was able to develop my understanding of working aesthetically relevant typography. i was also able to develop my layout understanding and critical content organisation within a yearbook publication.

i feel as though my contribution to the group was initally lacking however i think i managed to balance things out with the ammount of work i put in while completing the many menial tasks towards the final stages.

next time i will make more of an effort to show the skills i have to the group in order for them to delegate me more important/well fitting tasks.

overall, however, i feel as though the outcome was a very successful one that truly communicates the ethos of the PTSPD course and successfully embodies the mentality and work of the students included within it.

OUGD603. Extended Practice. The Method - Research Methodology Publication. Evaluation.

i have really enjoyed every aspect of this brief and i feel as though it has taught me a lot about my self as an individual, as a designer, and as a creative person within the industry.

working with ben to develop a research methodology has made me reflect upon me and how i view the world and select/extract information for my experiences. at first i was unengaged as i could not comprehend the larger point or application of the sessions we had with him. he was purposefully broad and this was frustrating at first because i didn't understand the outcome yet. when speaking to him in the crit i realised that there were things that i didn't personally that i applied to my research, to my design process, to my general activities and he was trying to help us realise these. i recognised my hand rendered basis and my love for language and cultural experience. from that i was then able to develop a methodology that i was happy with and that reflected me and how i work.

recognising that i am interested in culture and language (two things that i really enjoyed learning about for my COP work) helped to dictate the topic of research i would apply my methodology to. as evidenced, i was initially stumped as to the topic and was leaning in the direction of a city or location. it was then coincidence that i had booked a trip to Barcelona, a city that i love, with lots of creative culture, in a country that i would like to live in, and speaking a language that i can speak basically. it was a great coincidence. i was able to really successfully apply my methodology to the trip and this proved to me how successfully developed and refined it was because i could see it working smoothly right in front of me.

gathering the variety of research that i did was extremely fun because i was able to have all the experiences that are evidenced while on the trip. the refining and reflecting on the research i had was also engaging because it allowed me to look back at all the amazing experiences i had and and to the think about how to apply them to the publication.

because i had employed the visual aspect of my methodology while on the trip i was in possession of a multitude of sketches, observational drawings, scribbles etc, all pertinent to my method and thus to my publication. the production of the publication allowed me to develop a number of craft based skills that i was interested in. it also allowed me to practice my hand rendered  typography skills in line with the subject matter. all of this was relevant to my design process and style of work.

i feel that this project has helped me to mature a lot as a designer and as an individual and i enjoyed working on it very much.

if re-doing the project i feel that i would have considered layout more in line with the sub categorical content of each section of the publication. i would also have considered editing the photos a little bit before printing as some are a little bit dark. overall, however i am very proud of the outcome of my publication and my effort in answering the brief.

OUGD603. Extended Practice. The Method - Research Methodology Publication. Outcome

having produced my publication and being happy with the outcome i then went on to photograph it for the final boards and submission.

OUGD603. Extended Practice. PTSPD Yearbook: Outcome

fortunately we managed to get everything off for a test print in time and so i was able to get some half decent photogrpahs.

OUGD603. Extended Practice. PTSPD Yearbook: Page Numbers and Contact info

because i had been busy completing other projects and because danielle had worked on the brunt of this project i decided to take on some of the more arduous tasks to lighten the load for her.

my tasks were to apply the page number icons jordan had designed to each individual page and then to gather all the contact information for each student and apply it to the correct page in the .id file

OUGD603. Extended Practice. PTSPD Yearbook: Contents development

having developed the work a bit more i went on to develop and try to finalise the contents flow of the publication so that i could design the layout and content for the contents spread.

this took a lot of working out and reworking out and working out again and checking the excell sheet with all the names on it then checking the illsutrator file with all the name initials and seat arrangement and because certain thing were missing in certain files but at different pints it made it more and more difficult.

the second image shows the extent to which i had to keep revising the content but in the end i managed to work it out completely successfully and went on to design the contents page.

OUGD603. Extended Practice. PTSPD Yearbook: Class Photo

we arranged with bessie to take some photos of the whole class for the end of the yearbook.

i, with duncan, tried to organise the class into a group so that bessie could get photos with them all in.

the chosen one -

unfortunately most of the other ones turned out blurry which was suprising but the one above was acceptable so we went with it. we tried to rearrange the shoot but because of approaching deadlines and such it would have been too difficult.

OUGD603. Extended Practice. PTSPD Yearbook: YearBook Name Exploration

we considered that the yearbook could include a tailored name personal to the year and the students within it. i was tasked with this job.

i began by developing a brainstorm of the different aspects of the course and the year.

i then did some research into synonyms and associated words to gain a broader lingual understanding

i showed it to the group and they agreed that the two circled names could potentially work and so i emailed duncan to get his thoughts

hi duncan hope youre well.
ive been brainstorming some name ideas and have come up with a few that we quite like but wanted to get your opinion on them too.
if there is one you particualrly like let me know, similarly, if you dont like any of them and feel the yearbook would work fine without a name (or just 1215...) let me know also.

NAMES:

- From Element to Ornament

- Aesthetic Nomads

- Pack Mentality

- In Grain

thanks,

Joe

Hi Joseph,

We’ve bee thinking this end too - the first is probably the best of them but doesn’t necessarily convey the full extent of the programme range. Would we get away without a title/no name and just sell the course as is without trying to label it beyond its actual name do you think? or perhaps even look to using one of the tribal marks/squiggles you were looking to develop? Almost like when Prince decided to be come TAFKAP / Squiggle?

Duncan

hi duncan,

yeah we agree that none of the names fully encompass the course and to avoid not including all areas weve decided to go with just the 1215 and some symbology.
will develop that today and have things sent over to you later.

Joe.

Ok cool

OUGD603. Extended Practice. PTSPD Yearbook: Contents Development

i continued to develop the contents and the name inclusion for each student included in the yearbook
. bevcause some students still hadnt supplied their work i kept having to re do it to try and make everything fit.
