OUGD603. Extended Practice. Brief 2: FRESHWHIP SKATEBOARD DESIGN.

this was another client based brief that came to me in need of quick turn around. the founder/manager of a newly established skateboard company based in sheffield approached me about a skateboard deck design he wanted. having seen my instagram/behance, he requested a design lead by my style and i was very happy to take on the job.

i became familiar with the company so far and spoke to him about what he wanted the company to become and why he was starting it. he explained that he had been skating for around 20 years and wanted a chance to sponsor upcoming skaters while making a business out of apparel, skate paraphernalia and competitions. his general attitudes and desire to help youth through his business resonated well with me.

after a discussion about what sort of themes he wanted to include, and what styles he thought could be appropriate to the design i went on to write up the brief.

BRIEF TITLE: FRESHWHIP SKATEBOARD CO. BOARD DESIGN.

Brief:
‘Fresh Whip’ is a newly established skateboard and apparel company based in Sheffield. In order to create a big impact on the scene, and a demand for the company’s products, the manager wants an original and interesting design for print on the first release of skateboard decks.
The manager has conveyed an interest in both skateboarding, and cars and would like both to be incorporated into the design. He has, further, specified that the car involved must be some model of ‘Rolls Royce’, chosen by the designer. The style and aesthetic qualities are left to the designer’s choice, along with the visual content of the actual illustration.

Background:
‘Fresh Whip Skateboard Co.’ was founded in 2013 and has, since, been working on creating a name and brand image in the Sheffield area and have gain considerable recognition. With a recognisable logo, they have been, recently, producing various products (caps, t-shirts, hoodies etc).
Their next major product, therefore, is a first release skateboard deck. It is, hence, of paramount importance that the design be strong in quality and content.

Considerations:
·       What is the ethos of the company and how do they envision their design style?
·       What model of ‘Rolls Royce’ car should be involved in the illustration?
·       What other illustrative elements should be included (bearing in mind the skateboarding theme)?
·       What colours should be involved?
·       What tools and software should be utilized?

Mandatory Requirements:
1.     1 standard size skateboard graphic design incorporating all stated visual requirements.
2.     In full colour CMYK.
3.     Must include the ‘Fresh Whip’ logo somewhere in the design.

Target Audience:
·       Skateboarders and Skateboard enthusiasts in and around the Sheffield area (extended to the whole UK).
·       People who wear skateboard apparel.
·       Skateboard/General clothing outlets in and around Sheffield (extended to the whole UK).

Tone of Voice:
The tone of voice must be professional and visually engaging. It must convey a visual relationship with skateboarding while presenting an original and stylistic illustrative form.
It should appear friendly and cool while maintaining an energetic edge.

Deliverables:
·       Research into ‘Rolls Royce’ cars and the components that make them up evidenced on your blog.
·       Exploration of potential visual components and design make up through hand drawn and digital illustrations.
·       Colour exploration and appropriation.
·       Final board design.

because the nature of the brief and its requirements (a visual outcome) were based around my own artwork and my style of design, and because i was given creative freedom with the outcome, research was not really appropriate or necessary. not only would it take time from the progression and completion of the actual brief, but it may also cloud my creativity with preconceptions of other board designs. i decided that this brief would be answered successfully if i applied practical development alone.
