OUGD603. Extended Practice. Reflection and Reconsideration.

we had a PPP presentation in which we were asked to talk about the work we had done and planned to do in the time left for the rest of the year. we were asked to reflect on what we had achieved and where we thought we would be heading. i really enjoyed doing the presentation and felt like it was a really useful thing for me to be promted to reflect and to consider what i actually wanted to do.

i had already decided that i did not want to do the organic food packaging brief, the music tour brief, or the re-do of last years bouldering infographic brief because these were things that i was either not interested in or had already done. in terms of the bouldering brief, climbing is a pastime that i passionately enjoy but do not want to involve it in my work again for the time being.

i had already made a start with the calligraphy publication and had considered some aspects of the clothing company brief and so found it harder to make the decision to drop these briefs too.

i dropped the calligraphy brief mainly because of the time element. i had taken on a number of other briefs since the original planning of my self initiated briefs and so could not feasibly complete this brief to any professional extent that i would be proud of. i am very much interested in caligraphy and hand rendered type and so i feel that it is a shame that i have decided to drop the brief. i think it was a good decision to do so because i know that i would have either had to spend all my time doing it and so would not have been able to do some of the other briefs or i would have rushed it and not produced the outcome to the best of my ability. this brief is one that i wholeheartedly intend to pursue and produce after finishing uni because i feel i will have more time and less pressure to design and produce a quality publication.

the clothing company brief is another project i would like to pursue in the future, however, for similar reasons to the above i feel like it was an inappropriate brief for the time period i have and the other things i have going on.

the are a number of briefs that have replaced the ones i have dropped and these will be included in the blog with the formally written briefs produced and posted shortly.

OUGD603. Extended Practice. Clothing Company Brief. Initial Ideas.

as part of my clothing company brief i decided to explore possible names for the line.

personally i like the idea of relating the company name to my practice and so 'Sans Clothing' would work quite well. i was also thinking about the english translation of sans being 'without' and would like to look into different fabrics that would feel so comfortable and lightweight like a sewcond skin that one might feel like they were 'without' clothing.

OUGD603. Extended Practice. Calligraphy Publication: Primary Research and Development.

for personal development and in order to explore the various forms of calligraphy that exist i recently purchased a variety of calligraphy pens. i bought a set of pilot parallel fountain pens for blackletter caligraphy. i bought a set on tombow brush pens for script and brush caligraphy. my next door neighbour in sheffield is from china and she bought me a full set of chinese caligraphy brushes and inks which i was very happy with! i also purchased around 4 sets of different brand fineliners including pigma microns, letraset, staedtler etc.

i decided that the best way to project my knowledge about different forms of caligraphy would be to practice using all the pens in order to understand the stokes they produce, the way to handle and move them, the different techniques one can use to add flare or originality to their work, and how to become familiar with them in order to produce continuity in replication.

OUGD603. Extended Practice. Goodtype the Book Vol.1 Competition Brief. Development

from the visual reserach i had collected i decided to proceed with the physical piece. i decided to stick with the word formalities and it is a word i am familiar with and wanted to draw formally.

i did some preliminary exploration into the format the type piece might take -

i began by measuring and establishing a grid to which i could then pencil in the letter designs.

i then went on to hand render the final outcome with fine liner pens of different weights.

in order to digitally render the piece i first cut it away from the paper background

i then played with the contrast to set the levels and tones to a more readable level

there were some smaller bits still left around on the file so i placed a black background in order to locate them and remove them

i then used the colour picker to extablish the white

i then placed the  digital image on top of a plain white background.
